Niacinamide

Niacinamide (Vitamin B3)

Niacinamide, also known as Vitamin B3, is a water-soluble vitamin that has earned its status as a “gold-standard” ingredient in modern dermatology. Unlike many active ingredients that target a single concern, Niacinamide is a versatile physiological restorer. It is exceptionally well-tolerated by all skin types—including sensitive skin—and acts as a perfect synergistic partner to other regenerative ingredients found in high-performance formulations.

Mechanism of Action

At a cellular level, Niacinamide serves as a precursor to two essential co-enzymes: Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide (NAD+) and its phosphate form (NADP+). These co-enzymes are vital for the chemical reactions that skin cells need to repair damage, proliferate, and function optimally.

  1. Barrier Enhancement: Niacinamide increases the synthesis of ceramides and other intercellular lipids. By strengthening the lipid barrier, it significantly reduces transepidermal water loss (TEWL), as evidenced in clinical trials focusing on skin hydration and barrier function.
  2. Pigment Regulation: Unlike traditional brightening agents, Niacinamide does not inhibit melanin production directly. Instead, it prevents the transfer of pigment-containing melanosomes from melanocytes to keratinocytes. This makes it a key component in managing the appearance of photoaging-related hyperpigmentation.
  3. Oil Control & Pore Refinement: It helps balance sebum activity, which prevents pores from becoming congested and stretched, leading to a smoother, more refined skin texture.

Dermatological Benefits

Incorporating Niacinamide into your daily regimen offers a multitude of visible structural benefits:

  • Enhanced Hydration: By boosting the skin’s natural production of barrier-strengthening ceramides, it helps the skin retain moisture more effectively, making it an essential for Dry & Sensitive Skin.
  • Visible Brightening: It targets uneven skin tone and dark spots, promoting a more radiant and uniform complexion.
  • Anti-Ageing Support: It helps protect the skin from environmental stressors and supports the appearance of elasticity and firmness, particularly when paired with regenerative ingredients like Snail Secretion Filtrate.
  • Blemish Control: Its ability to regulate oil production and soothe the skin makes it a vital inclusion for those managing blemish-prone skin.

Formulation Nuances

Niacinamide is a remarkably stable molecule, but its efficacy is highly dependent on the surrounding formulation:

  • pH Stability: It performs best at a neutral pH (between 5.0 and 7.0). In highly acidic environments, it can convert into nicotinic acid, which may cause temporary skin flushing.
  • Synergy: It is highly compatible with other “superstar” ingredients such as Glycerin, Hyaluronic Acid, and Peptides. In the Endocare Tensage range, it works in tandem with firming technologies to provide a comprehensive approach to skin ageing.
  • Concentration: While effective at lower percentages, concentrations between 2% and 5% are clinically proven to deliver significant results in barrier repair and tone evening.

Contraindications

Niacinamide is widely regarded as one of the safest ingredients in skincare. It is non-sensitising and non-comedogenic.

  • The “Niacin Flush”: While rare, some users may experience a temporary redness if using very high concentrations (10%+) or if the product pH is too low.
  • Layering: It can be used both morning and night. While previously thought to conflict with Vitamin C (L-Ascorbic Acid), modern formulation science suggests they can be used together safely in most skin types, though those with highly reactive skin may prefer to use them at different times of the day.
